How To Start Building Your Capsule Wardrobe

Are you struggling to decide what to wear everyday? Or do you find yourself thinking you have nothing to wear? You’re definitely not alone. A new season is approaching and it’s time to sort through some pieces that have been hanging in your wardrobe, unworn, for too long. It’s time to create your perfect capsule wardrobe. This is a collection of clothing made up of interchangeable items to maximise the number of outfits that can be created. At Curobe, we believe that a key part of sustainability is being more conscious with our clothing choices, which means prioritising quality over quantity and investing in versatile pieces that will last.

Three Tips for Curating a Capsule Wardrobe

Also check out our earlier blog, giving some practical tips to go with your capsule checklist!

That being said, what should you consider putting in your capsule collection?

Blazer

A blazer is the perfect layering piece for all seasons. It can be used for many occasions and can be dressed up and down, bringing a look together. A slightly oversized boxy blazer is very transitional. It can be paired with jeans and a basic top, tailored trousers and a blouse or with a dress and heels. You can get blazers in all different bright colours, which are very popular this season. However, a personal favourite is a black faux leather blazer or a neutral blazer, which is a perfect addition  to your capsule wardrobe.

White Shirt

The simple silhouette of a white shirt is a staple piece in many people’s wardrobe and creates an effortless look. There are so many ways that a white shirt can be worn which makes them an essential in your wardrobe. You can either wear it buttoned up with jeans or trousers or wear it as an extra layer, open over a dress or shorts - perfect for spring/summer. If you want a more tailored look, try a French tuck technique with your oversized shirt to make it more fitted.  There are also so many necklines (collared, non-collared, round, v-neck) and lengths to play with, to select the best fit for your shape.

Blue Jeans

Blue jeans are a classic item that nearly everyone has, which we believe is even more universally worn compared to a pair of black jeans. Obviously when it comes to jeans, your go-to pair should be something that you feel 100% comfortable in, regardless of colour. There are so many different styles of jeans available, but one of our  favourites for versatility is the straight leg jeans. The style is very adaptable and can be worn both formally  and casually. Straight leg styles suit nearly every body shape – you might be surprised if you have never tried this style before. If straight-leg jeans aren’t your first choice then slim fit jeans are another classic option that suit most occasions.

Slip Dress

A slip dress is an effortless option for an evening event, which can also be easily dressed down for the day to day, with a knit jumper or a denim jacket. There’s a range of styles and colours, whether you want a little black dress that skims over your curves or a silk red midi dress to paint the town in. Slip dresses are the perfect option for all occasions.

Basic T-Shirt

A basic T-shirt is a must-have for a capsule wardrobe. It is one of the easiest and most versatile pieces of clothing. Whether you wear it casual day to day, running errands with joggers or even in a business/ smart casual workspace. You can layer it under a shirt or blazer or even under your slip dress for a more dressy look. You don’t necessarily need to go with a white t-shirt, but generally neutral colours can go with everything, bringing more versatility and wear over time.

Whilst these are not the only pieces you might need, they form a great foundation for your capsule wardrobe. And the best thing is, you might already have a number of these items in your existing wardrobe.  The most important part of building a capsule is that you wear all the items in your wardrobe and get maximum wear out of each piece, which not only increases the value of what you buy, but is also a great way to help us all consume more intentionally!
